After months of testing the Osprey Fairview 40, we’ve found this female-focused counterpart to the Osprey Farpoint 40 delivers thoughtful engineering for women travelers.
Disclaimer: We take the measurements of the bag provided by the manufacturer and compare them to the allowance listed on airline websites. This should be used as a guideline rather than a rule. Bags can change size as you pack them out, and every airline’s interpretation of compliance is different. Just because a bag is listed as carry-on compliant here doesn’t mean that the airline will interpret it that way.

The Travel Gear Collective team tested the 40L version extensively in urban environments and hostel settings. The carry-on compatible sizing proved ideal across multiple airlines.
Our testing covered all four current colorways: Night Jungle Blue, Zircon Red, Winter Night Blue, and Black. The practical color selection resists visible wear while maintaining versatility from mountain trails to city cafes.
The 450D recycled twist dobby polyester exterior demonstrated excellent durability. We appreciate the bluesign® certification and PFAS-free DWR coating for weather protection.
Four attachment points (two above the front pocket, two near the bottom) provide gear-securing options. During testing, we found the upper loops particularly useful for securing a travel water bottle. The shoulder strap attachment points proved ideal for frequently accessed items like hand sanitizer.
Hardware integration includes ITW components with Osprey branding throughout, from hip belt adjusters to zipper pulls. YKK zippers, particularly the robust #10 reverse coil closures on main compartments, performed reliably during our testing. Security-conscious travelers will appreciate the lockable main and laptop compartment zippers.
The compression system serves multiple functions: securing zippers, reducing pack volume, and providing attachment points for the separately-sold Fairview Daypack (included with 55L/70L versions). We successfully used the top strap to secure water bottles and travel jackets.
Dual padded handles feature breathable mesh and substantial cushioning. The side handle particularly excelled during overhead bin retrieval.
The women-specific design modifications proved significant during testing. Compared to the Farpoint, the shoulder straps feature a narrower cut with pronounced inward curve, eliminating the slippage issues our female testers experienced with the Farpoint. The sternum strap’s rail system maintained position without frequent readjustment.
The redesigned hip belt demonstrates thoughtful anatomical considerations with a more pronounced curve and shorter length, better accommodating female body types. The left hip belt pocket securely held passports and smartphones during testing, while maintaining quick access.
Osprey’s AirScape® back panel combines ridged foam with breathable mesh. Working in concert with the LightWire frame and ventilated harness components, the system effectively managed heat during extended wear.
The torso adjustment system proved crucial for accommodating different heights. The yoke mechanism allows precise positioning of the pack against the back – a particularly valuable feature given the diversity in women’s torso lengths.
We found the hideaway harness system exceptionally practical for travel. The straightforward process – unclip load lifters, unroll the cover panel, zip closed – streamlines overhead bin storage and protects straps during transit. The latest version eliminates the hook-and-loop fastener without compromising functionality.

Our extended testing revealed the Fairview 40’s focus on function over fashion. The pack demonstrated reliable durability from planes to hostels, though its size requires consideration in tight spaces like cafes. The robust construction handled ground contact without concern.
Full packing maintains better aesthetics, as partial loads can create slight sagging despite compression straps. The highly adjustable harness system accommodated various user sizes effectively, though initial setup requires patience to optimize fit.
The hip belt design presents a minor accessibility challenge. The hideaway panel’s zipper centers both belt sides, requiring extra maneuvering during pack-up, particularly with winter layers.
For optimal mounting, we recommend starting with the pack at waist height on a stable surface before engaging shoulder straps and buckles.
The 40-liter capacity distributes across several compartments. The redesigned front stash pocket replaces the previous dual mesh system, accommodating water bottles and quick-access items. The drainage hole effectively managed moisture during testing.
Our testing revealed key considerations for the front pocket. Bottles with handles (Hydro Flask or Nalgene) require securing via compression straps or carabiners to prevent displacement. Full main compartment packing reduces front pocket capacity.
The top compartment serves dual functions – toiletry storage for security checkpoints and quick-access essentials. Its nylon construction extends into the main compartment, limiting accessibility when fully packed. The hidden zipper design enhances security for valuables.
The laptop compartment’s repositioning to the left side improves weight distribution. This update accommodates 16-inch devices but eliminates the previous admin panel organization.
The clamshell main compartment provides substantial capacity. While packing cubes aren’t mandatory, they optimize space utilization and organization. The flexible sides require careful packing to maintain closure ability, aided by internal compression straps.
The padded laptop sleeve features a raised design for impact protection. Hidden toggles enable access to a discrete storage area beneath – ideal for documents and low-access items.
A large mesh pocket on the front panel offers additional organization. During testing, we successfully stored emergency items like lightweight towels and seasonal accessories. Space allocation requires strategic planning as all compartments share volume.
